If anyone is in Brooklyn today, my launch for Poetry Studio: Prompts for Poets is this evening at the Lofty Pigeon at 6:30 PM! I’d love to see you. We’ll be celebrating the book, and there will be a mini writing workshop.
But back to this month’s prompt. I’ve been thinking a lot about birds because, well, I’ve been looking out for specific kinds on the “Merlin Bird ID” app with my older daughter. It’s been fun starting to recognize certain birdcalls in the city as well in Maine when we were there. I recommend the app if you’re curious!
I’ve also been proofing a poem of mine that will be in an upcoming issue of the Georgia Review. City swans appear (and I wrote the word “plume” instead of “plumage,” which needed a correction before the issue went to print). The birds sort of arrived in the center of a longer poem about many other things, among them the stakes of our ecological crisis. If you end up finding the poem, let me know what you think! It’s called “Mean.”
