I’ve been thinking a lot about Li-Young Lee’s poem “The Gift” as Father’s Day approaches, in particular the part of the poem that shifts from the boy recalling his father pulling a splinter from his hand to the more contemporary person now: “Had you followed that boy / you would have arrived here / where I bend over my wife’s right hand.”
