Ha! You thought I was going to ask you to write a Father’s Day poem! (Happy Father’s Day, though, for those who are celebrating!) I’ve been thinking about Pride and birthdays, costumes and glitter. I’ve been thinking about what it means to gather, to celebrate, especially during bleak times. And I encountered this fantastic poem by Jacques J. Rancourt in the June issue of Poetry: “For the Cult-Themed Party.”
And so, my prompt for you this month invites you to investigate, take on, celebrate, and make new the life of the “I” at a party. When were you the “life of the party?” How might an “I” stumble into something magical and unexpected during the chaos of a gathering? How might an “I” in community with others shed a spotlight on a memory or wish? Is persona a kind of costume? When does it meld with the self, and when does it strip away?
